Project Overview

Tim Tudor teaches classes on LEED and green building at the Boston Carpenter Apprenticeship and Training Fund. He’s now put some of his lessons in to practice by doing a deep energy retrofit to his own home. The Tudor project was the first done under the Cape Light Compact pilot program. The goal of the program is to achieve significant energy reductions of 50% of more, by using materials and methods that deliver energy efficiency. The Tudor home achieved a 70% reduction which would net a $17,000 rebate from this program.
R-Shield Nailbase, a composite panel insulation and nailable surface for structural walls, was selected in the design. The 4” Nailbase was attached to the exterior walls and covered by a weather barrier and siding. The R-value rating for the walls is now R-25 and well air sealed.
Using Nailbase panels as part of this green building design help to achieve the requirements of this environmental overhaul and will contribute measurably in meeting the high energy efficiency requirements of this program.
Also used on the project: 4” EPS as a perimeter insulation on the foundation walls. In addition, Premier Building Systems (R-Control) Structural Insulated Panels were used on the roof bringing the roof’s R-value up to R-60.
Choosing R-Shield Nailbase over other retro fit methods.
- Saves labor with one step installation
- Saves energy - no thermal breaks
- Outside installtion - construction can occur without disruption of inside living areas.
- No long-term R-value loss or thermal drift
- Treatment available to provide termite resistance
- R-Shield Nailbase is also available with FrameGuard: FrameGuard treatment for wood helps to resist mold, mildew and termite damage to its wood components.
